A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
