The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
