The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

As confusing as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his crime policy states that when someone steals your coat you must offer him your sweater as well.
The obvious and direct fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of profound affection concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop over the last twelve months.
