On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
